Well, things are blooming a month early. I have spied with my little eye white Lady Banks starting to bloom and the saucer magnolias are out full bore at this point. We haven't had even what we would call a winter down here, and I can't help myself... I'm delighted. Nothing like a few extra months of 60s and 70s, no?
Here's a few pictures from around my neighborhood yesterday, come take a January walk with with me:
|
On the sidewalk..those Lady Banks are about to break |
|
Saucer Magnolias are VERY early... |
|
Of course the camellias are out too |
|
Daffodils about to break through crazy vines |
And here's a more wintery looking picture, taken on my walk to work a morning last week when it was actually foggy in Charleston. Thats a pretty rare occurrence here, anything resembling fog usually burns up by 5am in the summer, and its usually too breezy in the winter when the correct atmospheric conditions are at hand. It happens less than once a year, I'd say. This little lake down at the corner (an old mill pond back in the day) provided the perfect showcase. The night before I was sitting on my upstairs porch watching it roll in, thick as a blanket.
The fog was strange, how it hung around so long. January was a very humid month. I would walk outside in the morning and wonder, "did it rain last night?"
ReplyDeleteWow. Everything is early for you. How wonderful. I have a Lady Banks rose too, the white one and the fragrance is to die for. I love your 6th photo--the pathway and the trees with the drooping moss and the iron fencing--total eye candy! Interesting that you had fog. I'm glad you were able to get photos. Thank you for your kind comments on my blog. I do hope you're write about my book. Notice no quotation marks. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely neighbourhood walk! I love those Magnolias and the Camellias are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI'm not missing winter, either, but I'm still surprised at everything blooming out so early! Haven't seen any spring bulbs blooming in my garden yet. Love the pic with the hanging moss. Just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tour, it looks more like spring than winter. We have had a really mild winter too but magnolias are not about to bloom yet :(. Enjoy the weather. I really loved the fog pictures.

ReplyDeleteHello dear Jess :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the lovely walk! Does winter try to reclaim her hold if spring arrives early in your part of the world? She does here, and she can be quite nasty about it!
Jess, your walk through the neighborhood is lovely. It looks like springtime with all the blooming. Beautiful, rich images too.
ReplyDeleteJess - I wanted to let you know: I am awarding you the Versatile Blogger award. You can read more about it at my post here: http://dreamingofroses.blogspot.com/2012/01/1-blooms.html I hope you will accept it and have fun passing it on to others. Congratulations! :)
ReplyDeleteI love Charleston and definitely miss it but I'm in need of winter. Not too much, just enough to feel like I had all four seasons. I want snow!!! Waaaahh!!!
ReplyDeleteI saw that saucer magnolia and an inadvertent WOW came out of my mouth---it's January!!! My feeling about the weather has gone from loving it in November, worrying about it in Decemeber, to going with the flow in January--you can't control it anyway. I am gearing up my nursery to open early.
ReplyDeleteThe fact those daffs are able to burst through such a smothering layer of vines is testament to how tough those bulbs are. I love daffodils! Your last photograph is absolutely picture perfect. Beautifully composed with the bench and the tree, and that ethereal mist adds that serene touch to the scene.
ReplyDeleteIt has been several years since I have been to Charleston; your pictures are so beautiful, I may have to find a good weekend for a road trip.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and will have to bookmark it so I can visit often! Great pictures of Charleston - my favorite city!
ReplyDeletethis is a beautiful post, jess! ohh it makes me want to visit charleston again. you are so right...more 60s and 70s weather is all right by me, too. i'm worried about the azaleas, but maaaybe they will hold off and not get ruined. meanwhile, it's great to be outside. no mosquitos, no hellish humidity, just nice!
ReplyDeleteJess, this is yet another inspiring and wonderfully written post. I always enjoy your writing and have, therefore, nominated you and your Blog for The Versatile Blogger Award. My post this week includes your nomination and a link to your writing. ~Debra, Gardens Inspired
